When she's not just four...

I read this from one of my absolute favorite blogs- passionatehomemaking.com. Made me teary this morning!

“Now is the time to get things done…wade in the water, sit in the sun, squish my toes in the mud by the door, explore the world of a girl just four.
Now is the time to study books, flowers, snails, how a cloud looks; to ponder “up,” where God sleeps nights, why mosquitoes take such big bites.
Later there’ll be time to sew and clean, paint the hall that soft new green, to make new drapes, refinish the floor – Later on…when she’s not just four.”

Us Lately

So many updates... where to begin?

August was completely nuts for us, so forgive me for not blogging. My first cousin-in-law and my little sister both got married last month... both after being engaged 2 months or less! Life was a little hectic, but lots of fun.

I'll start with Stella. As of this week, she weighs 10 lbs. and 1 oz. and is still nursing like a champ! She'll be 7 weeks old tomorrow... hard to believe. In the past week, she had 3 major milestones- she slept through the night for the first time, stayed with her Nana (Jason's mom) while we went on a dinner date, and got her first sinus infection. Her hair is still as wild as ever, but I think she's absolutely adorable! The adjustment from 2 to 3 kids has been the easiest yet. She fits perfectly in our family, just as if she'd always been here. Things haven't been perfect... we've discovered that Stella is sensitive to yeast, which means I've had to nearly eliminate the sugar, wheat and dairy from my diet. If you know me at all, you know immediately know how hard that's been! She's worth it, though!!

Kylie started ballet in August, and let me just tell you... she LOVES it! She is such a little diva, so prancing in a tutu is right up her alley! She turned 3 on August 26, so we celebrated with her friends at Chuck E Cheese's. Her little personality is precious. Just this week, she had a full 2-way conversation with God where she asked God questions and then answered for Him! She makes my heart happy. :)

August was also Layla's first (and last) month of preschool at FBC Sumrall. As much as we all loved it there, I feel certain that I'm supposed to be homeschooling our kids. Today was our first official day of K3 and K4 at home, and I think it was a huge success! We finished with our teaching time and then went to play and picnic in the park. Layla also started Upward Soccer... she's definitely a little athlete!  Her first game is this weekend and we can't wait!!

Looking forward to September! :)

Stella Faye's Birth Story

"I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of Him." 1 Samuel 1:27

Our sweet family of 5 has been home from the hospital for a little over an hour now, and I'm just dying to share Stella's birth story with you! I am so blown away with God's goodness and how He orchestrated the entire experience for His glory.

On Tuesday morning, we had what would be our last prenatal appointment before Stella arrived. This was our first appointment with my doctor after she got back from her week-long vacation. Since we were already 4 days past our estimated due date, we had an ultrasound to make sure that everything looked good... and it did! Stella and I were both perfectly healthy and we decided that we could safely continue to wait for the Lord's timing on her arrival. I was still 3 cm dilated and around 60% effaced, so the doctor stripped the membranes (which she had also done 2 weeks earlier) to release some prostaglandins and hopefully trigger labor.

That evening around 9pm I also decided to give ole castor oil a try... and for the record, I don't think I would recommend it to my friends! :) I spent 11:00pm-11:30pm in the bathroom, having my system totally cleaned out. I'm so grateful that I was able to go to sleep after that and rest until my contractions woke me up at 2am. They were too intense to sleep through and coming every 1-2 minutes, lasting around 30 seconds each. At 3am, I woke Jason up (he had been running a fever that afternoon, so I was trying to let him rest) and told him what was going on. I still wasn't sure if it was truly labor or if this was some sort of side effects from the castor oil!! He thought that we should call my mom, since she too had tried castor oil when she was 12 days past her due date with Allie. She seemed pretty sure that it was in fact labor and suggested that I walk around the house and try a warm shower. I called our doula, Lacey, and got in the shower a little after 3:30am. The shower was WONDERFUL!! Excellent for pain relief! When I got out around 4am, I guess it hit me.. just how intense the contractions actually were. I knew we needed to get to the hospital pretty quickly! Jason called his parents to see if they could come pick up our big girls. By the time I dried my hair and got dressed (around 4:30am), I knew we couldn't wait for his parents, so we called them to see if they'd meet us at the gas station- and I'm so glad we did! We made it to the hospital at 5:09am, with me feeling the need to push while signing in at the nurses' station! When we got to the room, I was 9cm and pushing before they could get the monitors on me. After about 3 pushes, Stella was born at 5:35am on Wednesday, July 20th, 2011 with the help of a sweet nurse, Jason, my mom and Allie, and our doula. (The on-call doctor was doing a c-section at the time.) She weighed 7lbs and 5 oz and was 21 inches long.

Now before you think that I'm super woman, please know that as soon as we got to the hospital.. I was begging for drugs- even though I knew I didn't want them! I literally kept telling Jason that I thought I was going to die!! If you read my blog about my birth plan, you'll remember that I had planned and prayed that I would be too far along to get any drugs when we got to the hospital and the Lord answered that prayer! My sweet mama had also prayed that I'd have a 3 hour labor, and He provided again!! 3 1/2 hours from start to finish!

We were discharged from the hospital 31 hours after Stella's delivery. We are at home and doing very well! She's nursing like a champ and I feel great!! This recovery has definitely been the best of my 3. I'm so thankful that the Lord gave me the strength I needed.. not only to deliver my baby without medical intervention, but also to trust Him and His timing for her birth.

Thank you Jesus for the wonderful blessing of Stella Faye!!

Week 39: "Be anxious for nothing.." Philippians 4:5-7

"The Lord is near! Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:5-7

Today is officially the beginning of the 39th week of my pregnancy, and it's safe to say that I'm ready to have this baby! The Lord has been teaching me so much about waiting on Him and how to trust that His timing and His way is best, but it's still not easy to wait. Especially when you're as impatient as I am. And when it's 100 degrees in South Mississippi in July. As ready as I am, I am so thankful that Baby Stella did not decide to come while her daddy was away at Mission Fuge with our Youth group! Thank you Lord for answering that prayer. He made it safely home (after only running out of gas in the church van once) this afternoon and I am one happy girl!

My precious mama came to stay with us this week while he was gone- first off, because I'm a big chicken and don't like being alone and second, just incase Stella came early. We had such a fun week playing with the girls and doing a lot of wedding planning! My sweet baby sister is getting married on August 27th and we're all so very excited!! All of the wedding planning helped me keep my mind off wondering, "Is today going to be Stella's birthday??" :)

My focus this coming week will be to "be anxious for nothing.."
My goals are to...
-spend some sweet time with the Lord praying over this labor and delivery- that it'd be done to His glory and that He can use this experience to draw me closer to Himself
-savor every last minute of our time as a family of four
-devote as much attention as possible to my children- before the two become three
-go on a date with my husband
-continue our nightly family walks around the neighborhood
-prepare a few meals to freeze for quick and easy dinners after the baby is born
-clean my house so well that I don't even have to think about cleaning for a while

I'm still excited about sharing our birth experience with you! Hopefully it will be sooner, rather than later! :)

Waiting on the Lord - Psalm 27:13-14

"I remain confident of this:
I will see the goodness of the LORD
in the land of the living.
Wait for the LORD;
   be strong and take heart
   and wait for the LORD."
Psalm 27:13-14

As of today, I have approximately 17 days left of this pregnancy. Any woman that has carried a child this long will tell you that this is the point where we are very ready for the baby to come and to not be pregnant anymore! :) The Lord is using these last days to teach me to patiently wait on Him, and I am doing my best to learn all that He has for me to learn.

I think I'm looking forward to this birth even more so than I did my other two! With Layla, we were living in Ft. Lauderdale and my parents were living in St. Louis, so when my doctor suggested an elective induction I thought it sounded like an excellent idea. WRONG! After 52 hours of labor (on my back in a hospital bed), countless unnecessary interventions, and lots and LOTS of drugs, Layla was born. Shortly after her birth a nurse decided that she wasn't responding as she should be, so she- not a doctor- took her from us and admitted her to the NICU. After 48 hours in the NICU, all of the tests had been run and Layla was perfectly healthy. However, the NICU policy was that all babies receive 10 days worth of antibiotics through an IV at two doses per day. We were discharged and had to leave our healthy baby in the hospital for the remaining 8 days, and we (her parents) were only allowed to visit her during designated visiting hours. We missed out on the sweet bonding that God intended for mothers and newborns to have, I pumped full time for 4 months but was never able to successfully breast feed, and we had a terrible time with digestive issues once she started on formulas! Needless to say, our birth experience with Layla was nothing short of a nightmare. I am praising Jesus for the healthy, strong-willed child that she is today, but I can't help but feel a little robbed of "what could've been."

Two years later, we were preparing for the birth of Kylie. I was determined not to induce labor, but to let her come when God's timing was perfect. Once again though, my doctor suggested that we induce at 40 weeks. She told me that my uterus measured 1cm less than it had the week before and that it'd "be better for the baby" to go ahead and deliver. I take full responsibility for going ahead and inducing again and I'm thanking God for His mercy on me. Kylie was born after "only" 18 hours of induced labor (again.. laying flat on my back in a hospital bed). I never let her out of my sight during our day and 1/2 stay in the hospital. We went home with another very healthy baby girl and we were able to nurse successfully for 13 months.

Around 33 weeks into this pregnancy, I watched "The Business of Being Born" - an incredible documentary about the birthing process in our country. I highly recommend it to every woman in America! After watching it and "Pregnant in America", I felt like my eyes had been opened to my options concerning my birth experience.

I am VERY excited about waiting patiently on the LORD over the next few weeks, laboring at home as long as I possibly can, and then delivering naturally with as little medical intervention as possible at the hospital. We have hired a doula to help with the labor process and have an extremely supportive doctor. I'm not naive about the process of labor and all that it entails.. I am, however, very excited about being able to experience childbirth as God has designed it and rely totally on HIM to get through it.

I know this is such a touchy subject and it seems every woman has their own opinion about birth. :) I'd love some encouragement, support and suggestions ONLY from those of you who have delivered naturally and loved it! Only very positive and supportive comments, please!! :)

I can't wait to update you with the post on Stella's birth! :)

Motherhood: My Only Gems

I read this today on PassionateHomemaking.com and had to share!

“She came tonight as I sat alone, the girl I used to be....
And she gazed at me with her earnest eye and questioned reproachfully;
Have you forgotten the many plans and hopes that I had for you?
The career, the splendid fame, and all the wonderful things to do?
Where is the mansion of stately height with all of its gardens rare?
The silken robes that I dreamed for you and the jewels in your hair?
And as she spoke, I was very sad for I wanted her please with me…
This slender girl from the shadowy past the girl that I used to be
So gently rising, I took her hand, and guided her up the stair
Where peacefully sleeping, my babies lay innocent, sweet, and fair.
And I told her that these are my only gems, and precious they are to me;
That silken robe is my motherhood of costly simplicity.
And my mansion of stately height is love, and the only career I know
Is serving each day in these sheltered walls for the dear ones who come and go.
And as I spoke to my shadowy guest, she smiled through her tears at me.
And I saw that the woman that I am now, pleased the girl I used to be."

Let the nesting begin!!!!

Since my last post, we have moved into our new house!! Praise the LORD!!! I'm praying that we will be able to use our new home for God's glory- that we will "Fix these words of mine (the Lord's) in our hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on our hands and bind them on our foreheads. Teach them to our children, talking about them when we sit at home and when we walk along the road, when we lie down and when we get up. Write them on the doorframes of our house." Deuteronomy 11:18-20

It is mass chaos right now and our garage looks like an episode of Hoarders, but I'm so thankful to start organizing our home. We got the last of our stuff from our old house last night, and I scrubbed that place down! (We're really hoping to get all of our deposit back so that we can build a fence in the back yard). It is such a relief to be in the new place before baby Stella arrives. Now the nesting can begin!! :)

I'm convinced it would've taken my sweet husband a month to move us by himself, so I'm VERY thankful for all of the help we've had in the moving process!! My sweet parents and in-laws have spent every spare minute helping us pack, clean, move, and organize. We had an amazing team that came in Tuesday night to handle business- THANK YOU Jessica, Tom, Doug, Deane, and Juju for taking care of the heavy lifting! And my father-in-law's good friend, Billy Kitchens, has gone above and beyond for us- helping with leaks and offering his truck and trailer for the move. I'm so grateful for such sweet friends and family!!!

I posted a few pics on my facebook page, but I promise to post more as soon as I get things the way I want them. Stay tuned!!  :)

Easter Story Cookies-- Instilling the Truth of Easter in our Children

A friend recently shared this fun Easter activity in her blog and it was so good I had to re-post. We plan on doing it with our girls tonight, so I'll take lots of pictures and let you know how it goes. I hope you are rejoicing over Jesus' sacrifice this Good Friday with your family!

"As Easter has been approaching, I have been thinking of how important it is to communicate Jesus’ resurrection to our children. I think we can have the tendency to get caught up in the Easter Bunny or Santa Clause and forget the real reason why we are celebrating. I’m not saying that the Easter Bunny is wrong or evil, but I am saying it’s very easy to get distracted from the main thing. And distracting our children from the main thing is wrong.  It’s so important to take these opportunities to instill God’s truth in the hearts and minds of our children. I’m reminded of the passage in Exodus 12, where God instructs the Israelites to observe the Passover.
“Obey these instructions as a lasting ordinance for you and your descendants25When you enter the land that the LORD will give you as he promised, observe this ceremony. 26 And when your children ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’27 then tell them, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to the LORD, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.’” Then the people bowed down and worshiped. 28 The Israelites did just what the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron.”
God specifically told the Israelites what to say to their children when they asked. It was that important! I think it’s also important to see that the Israelite children asked their parents these questions because they were watching their parents obey God’s instructions. What are our children seeing as they watch us celebrate Easter this year?
We have done this for the last few years and it has become tradition in our home. It is always a very special time for us and our children as we remember the real reason we celebrate Easter.  I found it somewhere online and can’t remember where…
You must try this with all of your little ones!

Easter Story Cookies

Ingredients/Items needed:

  • Bible
  • 1 cup whole pecans
  • 1 tsp vinegar
  • 3 egg whites
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 qt or gallon size zipper bag
  • wooden spoon
  • tape

Preheat oven to 300 degrees.

Place pecans in ziploc bag and let kids beat them with the wooden spoon to break into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested, He was beaten by the Roman soldiers. Read John 19:1-3, “Then Pilate took Jesus and had Him flogged. The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head. They clothed Him in a purple robe and went up to Him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they struck Him in the face.
Let each child smell the vinegar. Add a teaspoon of vinegar into the mixing bowl. Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross He was given vinegar to drink.Read John 19:28-30, “Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, ‘I am thirsty.’ A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. When He had received the drink, Jesus said, ‘It is finished.’ With that, He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.”
Add egg whites to vinegar. Eggs represent life. Explain that Jesus gave His life to give us life. Read John 10:10-11, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.”
Sprinkle a little salt into each child’s hand. Let them taste it and brush the rest into the bowl. Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus’ followers, and the bitterness of our own sins. Read Luke 23:27, “A large number of people followed Him, including women who mourned and wailed for Him.”
So far the ingredients are not very appetizing. Add 1 cup of sugar. Explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us. He wants us to know and belong to Him. Read Psalm 34:8, “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him.” and John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.”
Beat with a mixer on high speed for 12-15 minutes until stiff peaks are formed. Explain that the color white represents the purity in God’s eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus. Read Isaiah 1:18, “Come now, let us reason together”, says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow, though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.” And John 3:1-3, “Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, ‘Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God, for no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.’In reply Jesus declared, ‘I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.’”
Fold in broken nuts.
Line cookie sheet with waxed paper. Drop mixture by spoonfuls onto waxed paper. Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus’ body was laid. Read Matthew 27:57-60, “As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered it to be given to him. Joseph took the body, wrapped it in clean linen cloth, and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away.”
Place the cookie sheet in the oven, close the door and turn the oven OFF. Give each child a piece of tape and seal the oven door. Explain that Jesus’ tomb was sealed. Read Matthew 27:65-66, “Take a guard,” Pilate answered, ‘Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.’ So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting a guard.”
GO TO BED. Explain that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight. Jesus’ followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed. Read John 16:20, “I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.” And John 16:22, “So with you - Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice and no one will take away your joy.”
On Easter morning, open the oven and remove the cookies. Take a bite. Notice – the “tomb” is empty!
On the first Easter, Jesus’ followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty.
Read Matthew 28:1-9, “After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. The angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; He has risen just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay. Then go quickly and tell His disciples: He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see Him. Now I have told you.’ So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell His disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them, ‘Greetings’, He said. They came to Him, clasped His feet and worshipped Him.”
Hallelujah!!! I am so glad that My Redeemer Lives!!! Happy Easter!

This is the stuff...

So this post definitely needs the Francesca Battistelli song playing in the background, so sing along with me while you read :) ... "This is the stuff that drives me crazy, this is the stuff that's getting to me lately. In the middle of my little mess, I forget how big I'm blessed. This is the stuff that's getting under my skin, but I've got to trust that You know exactly what you're doing. Might not be what I would choose, but this is the stuff You use!"

The past few days have been rough for me. I try so hard not to complain about my "stuff" because I know how undeservingly blessed I am, but I felt the need to share- just in case anyone that reads this might be struggling with the same things.

For starters, I feel like I spend all day repeating myself and my kids don't listen. (That's probably not the reality, but that's how I'm feeling). I don't like having to ask them to do something 17 times before it gets done, but I also don't want to spend all day punishing them. I'm just looking for a solution-- I want to raise children who are obedient and respectful.

Then we can move to our sleep situation. (You should know that I require more sleep than most people. I was always the first one asleep at the slumber parties!) The girls are both trying to give up their naps-- and I, like most mothers of preschoolers, am fighting it with everything I've got! I love that afternoon down time, so I'm trying some other options. We're working on "quiet time" in their beds for an hour with the timer set. Today was the first day and it went really well- both actually fell asleep, giving me some time to blog! :) We're also having some major issues with bedtime at night. The girls are currently sharing a double bed, and we are having a really hard time getting them down. We're considering separating them, but be praying that we'd find a solution. I want to have a peaceful bedtime routine!

Lastly, I'm not sleeping well at all. I know it's probably mostly due to being almost 28 weeks pregnant, but I'm having some very annoying symptoms on top of just being big and uncomfortable. My nose has been severely congested- I'm talking pressure to the point of not being able to breath AT ALL through my nose. This is causing me to have to breath through my mouth at night, which is leading to the driest dry mouth I've ever experienced! When I wake up (5 or more times a night), my mouth feels like sandpaper. I definitely haven't had a problem with this in the past or in my previous pregnancies, so any advice/suggestions are greatly appreciated! Sudafed doesn't help at all. I've tried a netti pot, but the water doesn't even come out of the other side. Saline spray and a humidifier by my bed haven't helped. I'm trying to drink more water, but I feel as though that's waking me up even more due to my ever-shrinking bladder!

I'm so thankful for my sweet girls and for our precious Stella. My prayer is that I can see past all of these "little things" to truly enjoy my girls and my pregnancy. I'm also very thankful for my sweet mama, who listens to me vent and then comforts me with her wisdom and discernment from the Lord. She reminded me of this today:

"He tends his flock like a shepherd:
He gathers the lambs in His arms
and carries them close to His heart;
He gently leads those that have young."
Isaiah 40:11

Thank you Lord for leading me and providing me with what I need to be the wife and mother you've called me to be!

The Smith's on Spring Break

We had SOOOO much fun on Spring Break this year!! We were able to spend a few days with our precious friends in Ft. Lauderdale, and the Lord blessed us with a trip to Disney World!

South Florida was our home for over 5 years. We moved there when we'd only been married 4 months, and we didn't know a soul. During those 5 wonderful years, we were blessed with an awesome church family, jobs that we loved, the first home that we owned, and most importantly-- two beautiful little girls. Being back in South Florida for the first time since the move was so much fun! There are definitely lots of things we miss (our friends, the beach, yummy Cuban food, etc..), but we are so thankful to be raising our family in Mississippi.

We started our trip off with a few days with our friends- the Wrights. Our kids had such a fun time playing with their sweet kids! Having 6 kids under 6 in the house was definitely entertaining!! On Monday night, Crystal invited some of our friends from church over to hang out and visit. Great food and great company = great night! Then on Tuesday, we had breakfast on South Beach and then Jason went to watch the SHCS baseball game. I'm so glad he got to go, because I know he misses coaching so much. On Wednesday, we got to play at a really fun park with a splash pad, before leaving for Orlando.

(L to R: Keller, Carter, Kylie, Layla, Baby Carsen, and Cooper)

Daddy and Layla enjoying Blizzards! :)

These were taken at the park in Emerald Hills. Layla kept asking everyone why they were speaking Spanish!! Ha-- it was actually Hebrew, so we got to have some interesting conversations about the Prince of Egypt. :)

Kylie and Carter

Love that face!

Peek-a-boo!

Breakfast on South Beach

The water was freezing, but the girls didn't seem to mind!

Kylie eating onions at Las Vegas--we surely did miss Cuban beans and rice!

Layla and Cooper

"Calling" each other on the phone

Cutie!!

After all of that fun, it was time to head to DISNEY!!!! Our sweet friends Paul and Vivian let us stay in their beautiful condo, that just happens to be practically next door to the Magic Kingdom. My sweet friend Jasmine also blessed us beyond belief by getting us park tickets from her friend who works for Disney! Here are a few pics from our time in the parks.

SOOOO excited!!

Ready to tackle DISNEY!!

Honey I Shrunk the Kids Playground = Parent's worst nightmare! Dark tunnels that have multiple exits, kids and adults everywhere, and lots of screaming. Needless to say, we only stayed about 10 minutes!

Layla sliding

I can't remember which show this was, but it was something in 3D! :)

We had such a fun trip!!

Smith Academy 2020-2021

It's that time of year again... Back to School time! Well, it's probably a little early for school to start back based on ...
